EENet's history

The Estonian Education and Research Network (EENet) was established in August 1993 as a governmental non-profit organization. From 1997 until April 2013 EENet operated as a state agency administered by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.

In April, 2013 EENet was transferred to the Hariduse Infotehnoloogia Sihtasutus (HITSA; Information Technology Foundation for Education) with all rights of representation in international organisations.

On 1 August 2020 the Ministry of Education and Research of Estonia and HITSA transferred all HITSA's rights and obligations (including contracts and the whole EENet) to the Haridus- ja Noorteamet (Harno), in English Education and Youth Authority. HITSA itself was liquidated.

On 1 January 2021 the name of Haridus- ja Noorteamet in English was changed to the Education and Youth Board.

On 1 October 2021 the Ministry of Education and Research and the Education and Youth Board transferred the Technology Management Department of Harno, including the Estonian Education and Research Network EENet, to the Ministry of Education Research.
