20 years ago on 23.04.1992 while King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia visited Tartu (Estonia), the first Internet connection between Tartu and Stockholm was started and thus a new era for international cooperation for researchers of Tartu University, Estonian Biocentre and other research institutions began.
The initiators for internetworking were Estonian National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics and Estonian Biocentre. Shortly after, in 1993, the first Internet service provider Estonian Educational and Research Network EENet was founded by the Ministry of Education.
The initial 64 kbps satellite link between Tartu and KTH Royal Institute of Technology was 78 times slower than the international connection of Estonian research network today, 20 years later.
