Upgrades of backbone network connections in 2008

• Since 12 July 2008 Estonian international connection to the academic network is 2.4 Gbps
• On 12 June 2008 the connection centres in Põlva and Räpina were terminated due to the lack of users. The centres had been working 10 years and 4 months.

EENet in numbers

• 262 institutions with permanent connectivity
• 618 webhomes in the nw.eenet.ee server
• 101 webhomes for teachers from 53 different schools in koolielu.edu.ee server
• 22 schools use KooliPLONE and 23 schools IVA in the zope.eenet.ee server
• 114 schools use virtual study environment VIKO in viko.eenet.ee server
• 5258 e-mail inboxes from 373 different institutions in EENet server
• 173 institutions use HAVIKE- The Virtual Environment for Education, launched in 2008
• 672 mailing lists from 275 different institutions in EENet server
• 527 client institutions (61%) answered to the EENet user survey

Most important international cooperation projects in 2008

• The Baltic Grid project ended on 30 April 2008
• In May 2008 the Baltic Grid II project was launched. Baltic Grid II is designed to increase the impact, adoption and reach and to further improve the support of services and users of the recently created e-Infrastructure in the Baltic States. By the end of 2009 there were over 1800 processors and 120 terabites of storage capacity available via grid environment in the Baltic States.

5270 pictures from 195 schools were sent to EENet 7-th computer drawing competition in 2008. The contest was dedicated to the 90th Anniversary of the Estonian Republic.
